Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. had been in a similar situation when their existing customers asked the company to not only design their second model optically differently but to also create a version with a sportier and more extreme driving experience.

The result is a car with a uniquely high performance of 1,200-hp offering experienced drivers a whole new dimension of excitement, with a maximum torque of 1106 lb-ft and a limited top speed of 258 mph (to protect the tires) but, the technique of the Super Sport is identical to the record car.

New York collector and Ferrari enthusiast Peter Kalikow visited the Ferrari factory yesterday to take delivery of his Special Projects Ferrari Superamerica 45, a unique one-off model. Styled internally by Ferrari Design and engineered and built in-house, the car was specified by Mr Kalikow to celebrate 45 years since he first became a Ferrari client and will make its public debut on the 20th of May at the Villa d'Este Concorso d'Eleganza.

The design is bespoke, featuring a carbon-fiber rotating hard-top which incorporates a rear screen. The boot is entirely new to house the roof when open, and is now in carbon-fiber with a design optimized to reduce drag and increase rear downforce.

The rear buttresses are body-colored, integral with the rear wheelarches, and incorporate rear quarterlights. The side view is further distinguished by double air vents on the front wing. The Ferrari Superamerica 45 also features a specific chromed front grille and special burnished aluminum A-pillars, wing mirrors and door handles.

The Superamerica 45 is finished in an exclusive Blu Antille, a color that matches another important car in the client's collection - a 1961 400 Superamerica cabriolet nr. 2331SA. The wheels are body-colored with a contrasting diamond finish to the spokes. 2012 Volkswagen Beetle Black Turbo Edition

The Beetle Black Turbo series is limited to 600 examples and marks the start of Volkswagen's Vehicle Pre-Order (VPO) program, an online reservation process for consumers. The Black Turbo launch edition is fitted with Volkswagen's DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission and the acclaimed 2.0-liter, in-line four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque.

In addition to the turbocharged performance features, the four-cylinder engine offers an EPA fuel economy rating of 30 mpg on the highway when outfitted with the automatic transmission. This sporty model has a starting MSRP of $24,950.

Standard features include Bluetooth technology, iPod connectivity, three-color ambient lighting, larger brakes with red calipers, a "kaeferfach" additional glovebox that is similar to that of the original Beetle, sport cloth seating surfaces, 18-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, foglights, and alloy pedals. Porsche is widening the top end of its Carrera model line and pairing the 911 Carrera GTS with an all-wheel drive twin. That means that the 911 Carrera 4 GTS Coupe will combine the 408 hp top of the range engine of the Carrera GTS family with the intelligent, all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM).

Driving dynamics are not the only source of attraction. Economics are as well. Thanks to Porsche Intelligent Performance the new all-wheel 911 consumes no more than the equivalent Carrera 4S version. Moreover the Carrera 4 GTS boasts an even more comprehensive standard equipment package compared with the Carrera 4S model.

The Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS power unit has its origins in the 3.8-liter, six-cylinder Carrera S engine. A wholesale revamping of the intake duct added 23 hp, taking the power output to 408 hp at 7,300 rpm. The special aspiration system not only improves peak power output but flexibility and power development as well thanks to a more generous torque curve in the lower and middle engine speed range. 236 lb-ft (320 Newton meters) kick in from as low as 1,500 rpm; the six-cylinder engine delivers its rated torque of 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) in the broad engine speed range from 4,200 rpm and 5,600 rpm. The sports exhaust system fitted as standard ensures a distinctly sporty sound. It invests the new Carrera 4 GTS with an unmistakable acoustic signature and the rear view of its tail pipe with its unique black surface design lends it a unique character.

At full power the 2012 Porsche Carrera 4 GTS Coupe sprints to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The 911 Carrera 4 GTS is fitted as standard with a six-speed manual transmission but the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) seven-speed is available as an option if desired. Visually, the new 2012 Carrera 4 GTS model with all-wheel drive differs in points of detail from earlier variants with rear-wheel drive: In addition to the type name on the doors and rear lid, the distinguishing characteristic of all models with all-wheel drive is the additional reflective stripe between the taillights. What the Carrera GTS models have in common is the 911's wide body, otherwise reserved for the all-wheel version of the 911s, and the rear axle track width that goes with it. In numerous other details as well the GTS models differ both visually and technically from the other Carrera models. For example, they run on 19 inch RS Spyder wheels in black with central locking and gloss-lathed rim flanges fitted with 305/30 ZR19 tires on the rear axle.

Additional visual features include the Sport-Design front apron with black painted spoiler lip and special side skirts, also in black. Driver and passenger are accommodated on sports seats. Volkswagen has now presented the Golf GTI Cabriolet Concept in a world debut at Wörthersee - it is the first officially built open-top version of the icon.

There are plenty of good reasons for introducing this extremely dynamic concept in 2011: this year, the Golf GTI celebrates its 35th anniversary, and the legendary GTI Meet at Wörthersee is taking place for the 30th time. 2011 is also the year of the new Golf Cabriolet.

While the production Golf cabriolet can already be ordered, the Golf GTI Cabriolet Concept is still a concept.

Visually, the fire red "Firespark Metallic" open-top GTI shows independent ways: especially noteworthy here are the add-on parts designed in shiny black piano paint. The concept's styling focuses on extreme precision with lines that appear as if cut by a razor. The add-on parts themselves are on the one hand delicate and light, but at the same time sturdy and integrally designed. A look at the front and rear spoilers or the side sills designed in the style of splitters used in motorsport shows this impressively.

Visual highlights: the front fog lights of the GTI gave way to air guides for ventilating the high-performance brake system that is used in the cabriolet. In side profile, the open-top GTI's look is characterized by black-silver 19-inch "Glendale" alloy wheels with 235 tires. They fill out the wheel housings completely, since the Golf's ride height was lowered with a coilover suspension. Another feature that stands out in side profile are the brake calipers painted "Tornado Red" with black GTI logos.

The concept car's interior was upgraded with "Black Stripe" pattern accents and Nappa leather seats with red GTI logos in the head restraints. The seams between the individual leather surfaces provide a sporty contrast; they are styled in "Flash Red" and "Crystal Grey". Two-tone door inserts were coordinated with the seat pattern. As on the interior door panels, fine red decorative seams also customize the leather-trimmed steering wheel and the trim of the gear shift and parking brake levers. This color is repeated in the red borders of the black safety belts and the black-red piping of the floor mats. Classic effects are achieved by aluminum door sill plates with worked-in GTI logo. By the way, the cabriolet's driving performance - with its 210 hp GTI engine - fully matches that of the closed-top GTI - i.e. right around 149 mph (240 km/h) and 6.7-second for the sprint to 60 mph.

The Audi R8 GT Spyder high-performance sports car develops 560 hp and has trimmed a full 187 lbs (85 kilograms) from an already low weight. The R8 GT Spyder accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 197 mph (317 km/h).

One year ago, Audi unveiled the R8 GT in coupe form as the new flagship model of the R8 model line. It wasn't long before all 333 units in the limited series were sold out. Now the open-top version of the high-performance sports car is being launched, with production again capped at 333 units. Each car sports a tag with its individual number on the gear lever knob.

The Audi ultra lightweight technology is the key to the R8 GT Spyder's weight of just 3,616 lbs (1,640 kilograms). That's 187 lbs (85 kilograms) less than its technical basis, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro. The Audi Space Frame (ASF) body, consisting of cast nodes, extruded sections and aluminum panels, accounts for just 214 kilograms (471.79 lb) of the total weight. The body is assembled predominantly by hand in the R8 workshop at the Neckarsulm plant. Final assembly of the car takes place in the same way.

The engine frame is made of ultra-light magnesium; the long cover over the soft-top compartment and the large side panels at the rear are made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). CFRP is also used for the modified front spoiler, the fixed rear spoiler and the new rear bumper. Together, these components provide a weight saving of 12 lbs.

Starting in July 2011, Porsche is bringing the mid-engine coupé to market in a special edition limited to 500 units boasting even better performance and especially lavish equipment specification.

The Cayman S Black Edition is powered by a 3.4 liter six-cylinder boxer engine with power output increased by 330 hp at 7,400 rpm. The maximum torque remains unchanged at 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) at 4,750 rpm.

The extra power feeds directly through into the performance of the all black two-seater. The acceleration times from zero to 60 mph are improved to 4.9 seconds with the six-gear manual transmission and to 4.8 seconds with the optional Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) respectively.

A mere 4.6 seconds are required if the Launch Control is activated on the Sport Chrono package, available as an option. The Cayman S Black Edition's top speed is a bit faster than the Cayman S - 173 mph (279 km/h) with the manual transmission and 172 mph (277 km/h) with the PDK respectively.

The Cayman S Black Edition is not just more sportily agile in terms of its longitudinal dynamics but laterally as well. Among other factors, this is attributable to the Boxster Spyder wheels in black, which with a diameter of 19 inches are not just one inch bigger than the standard Cayman S wheels but are also half an inch wider than the optional 19 inch wheels on the Cayman S. The tire sizes fitted are 235/35 ZR19 on the front axle and 265/35 ZR19 on the rear axle.

With its comprehensive and particularly high-quality equipment, the Cayman S Black Edition also caters for exceedingly exacting demands. For example, Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights and LED daytime running lights are just as much part of the basic specification as are automatic anti-dazzle interior and exterior mirrors with integrated rain sensor. Driver and front seat passenger sit on black partial leather seats with Porsche crest on the headrests; climate control ensures a comfortable temperature. The driver pilots the Cayman Black Edition by means of a Sport Design steering wheel, the cruise control makes driving at constant speed a more comfortable and economical experience.

The color scheme of the limited edition sports coupé is consistent to the smallest detail: the dashboard trim is black as are the gear lever/selector trim and the instrument dials in the instrument cluster. The door entry guards emblazoned with the lettering "Black Edition" are made of stainless steel; the glove compartment lid bears the badge proclaiming the limited edition status. Equipped with Sound Package Plus, the Cayman S Black Edition's infotainment systems are controlled via Porsche Communication Management (PCM). This also includes, for example, the navigation module and universal audio interface (AUX, USB, iPod). Mobile phone integration is already enabled. In all, the Cayman S Black Edition features the Porsche Comfort, Infotainment and Design packages, offering a price reduction into the bargain.

Volkswagen presented the Golf R Cabriolet Concept car with 266 hp of power and a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h) at the largest GTI meet in the world in Worthersee, Austria. This "power cabrio" also demonstrates the inexhaustible potential of the Golf.

Volkswagen just recently introduced the new Golf Cabriolet, and the designers and engineers of Volkswagen R GmbH have already come up with an extremely sporty variant of this model: the Golf R Cabriolet Concept. Like its closed top counterpart, the 266 hp Cabriolet concept races to the 60 mph mark in less than six seconds.

Their top speeds are also identical at 155 mph (250 km/h). This makes the R Cabriolet the fastest open-top Golf ever. Even more impressive, however, is the engine's tremendous torque - 285 lb-ft (350 Newton metres) from a low 2,500 rpm make this cabriolet an ideal cruiser.

Like the closed-top Golf R, the cabriolet was lowered by an inch (25 mm) via a sport chassis. A 17-inch brake system with internally ventilated discs at all wheels and blue painted high-performance brake callipers (including R-logo) enables impressive deceleration values. Making contact to the road surface on the Golf R Cabriolet Concept are 19-inch "Talladega" alloy wheels with size 235 tires.

Naturally, the Golf R Cabriolet Concept also presents an especially sporty interior concept. Motorsport shell seats in dark blue carbon leather, combined with high-end Nappa leather in "Pure Grey", set the tone here. The backs of the shell seats are painted in luxurious black piano paint. The Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro is a one-off vehicle built to the limits of technology for breathtaking dynamics. Audi is presenting the showcar in Reifnitz, in the Austrian state of Kärnten, at the Wörtherseetour 2011. The 30th edition of this major meeting for Audi, Seat, Skoda and VW fans takes place from June 1 - 4, 2011.

The heart of the Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro is a classic Audi gasoline engine - a five-cylinder unit displacing 2.5 liters with turbocharging and direct fuel injection. Compared with the version used in the Audi TT RS and RS 3 Sportback on which it is based, the output of the TFSI has been increased dramatically to 503 hp and 487 lb-ft (660 Nm) of torque. Maximum power is available between 2,500 and 5,300 rpm.

The turbocharger, intercooler, admission tract and the exhaust line have been systematically tuned for high performance. As on the Audi A4 DTM, the tailpipe is located on the left flank, just in front of the rear wheel.

Another area where the A1 Clubsport Quattro shines is its overall weight of just 3,064 lbs (1,390 kilograms). The powerful engine catapults the car from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. From 0 to 124 mph takes just 10.9 seconds, while the car goes from 50 to 75 mph in fourth gear in just 2.4 seconds.

A six-speed manual transmission and Quattro permanent all-wheel drive, both taken from the TT RS and enhanced, deliver the power to all four wheels. Top speed is governed at 155 mph (250 km/h).

The Audi showcar rolls on 255/30 low-profile tires mounted on 19-inch alloy wheels with a unique turbine design. Sitting behind the wheels are large, internally ventilated disc brakes. Up front, six-piston calipers grab perforated carbon fiber-ceramic discs. Large steel discs are mounted on the rear axle. When the first Beetle rolled off the production line, it was called simply the Volkswagen - 'the people’s car' - but its distinctive shape inspired nicknames across the globe. In total, 21.5 million cars were sold.

More than 60 years later, in 1998, the "New Beetle" rekindled the spirit and imagination of the original to a new generation of Volkswagen owners. The second generation version sparked another round of uplifting and joyous enthusiasm known as Beetle Mania.

Today, the Beetle opens a new chapter in its remarkable story. The third generation of the internationally beloved Beetle is celebrating a transcontinental world debut simultaneously in Shanghai, Berlin and New York.

Updating an icon

Only someone who knows and respects the Beetle’s heritage could produce a new generation of this storied vehicle. The task for Volkswagen engineers was clear. They had to develop a modern interpretation of the Beetle, with all the benefits of today’s technologies and efficiencies, and the driving characteristics that define the Volkswagen brand. The result had to remain affordable and stay true to the Beetle’s spirit and great heritage.

The design of the new Beetle presented another challenge. How does one reinvent a look that is so recognizable and unique? Volkswagen Group Design Chief Walter de Silva and Volkswagen Brand Design Chief, Klaus Bischoff, welcomed the task and set an ambitious objective: “Design a new original!”

The designers wanted to develop the new car around the earliest Beetle profile rather than the 1998 New Beetle. They wanted a car that respects the past but looks toward the future. And that is what they created.

Exterior

The 2012 Beetle is an automotive icon reinvented. Placing the original Beetle and the 21st Century Beetle next to one another, it’s clear that the lines of the rear sections are nearly identical, but the overall look is bolder and more dynamic. The Beetle also breaks free of the design geometry defined by three semi-circles (front wing, rear wing, domed roof above it).

“The Beetle is now characterized by a clean, self-confident and dominant sportiness. The car not only has a lower profile; it is also substantially wider, the front hood is longer, the front windshield is shifted further back and has a much steeper incline. All of this creates a new dynamism,” explains Klaus Bischoff.

The 2012 Beetle is 71.2 inches wide (3.3 inches wider), 58.5 inches tall (.5 inches lower) and 168.4 inches long (6 inches longer). The new focal point is the C-pillar. The development team also increased the car’s track widths and wheelbase. All of this gives the Beetle a powerful appearance with muscular tension.

Another feature is the rear spoiler that is integrated into the design (standard on 2.0L TSI engines with 200 hp). The top surface of the rear spoiler is black, while the underside is painted in body color.

The Beetle is sportier, offering both turbo-charged TDI® Clean Diesel and turbo-charged gasoline engines, in addition to dual exhaust, performance-handling packages, 19-inch wheels, sport seats and new, sleeker styling. Volkswagen will offer a panoramic roof, a range of audio options, including the Fender® Premium Audio System, and a customization program for the 2012 Beetle with a large number of personalization options, including a wide variety of colors and wraps along with an annual theme model.

Interior

The 21st Century Beetle offers an agile, driver-oriented coupe experience with a quality of materials that goes beyond all class limits. The car’s styling, ergonomics and quality interact to create a new, friendly car with a highly individual nature.

The shape and use of color in the painted or carbon-look dashboards harkens back to the design of the first Beetle.

Three round instrument gauges are arranged in front of the driver (tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge) providing all key information at a glance. A multifunction display is integrated in the speedometer in middle position. The steering wheel is specially designed with optional painted accents in the spokes depending on the equipment line.

Framed by two air vents, the selected audio/navigation system is optimally located in the driver’s visual field on the dashboard. Within easy reach, climate controls are situated just below.

Similar to the original Beetle, the new car has an extra glove box integrated into the dash. The lid folds upward, while the standard glove box opens downward. Another classic feature: the optional auxiliary instruments above the selected audio/navigation system: oil temperature, clock with stopwatch function and boost pressure gauge.

The “cathedral ceiling” dome roof of the New Beetle has been replaced with a sleek and sporty roofline. Front and rear passenger headroom remains plentiful. In the rear seating area, the longer roof section results in more space. The trunk is significantly larger, offering 10.9 cubic feet of space. A split-folding rear seat and a wide opening trunk lid ease loading and unloading.

Engine and Transmission

The 2012 Beetle will offer three engines: the 2.5L gasoline five cylinder, the 2.0L TDI® Clean Diesel and the 2.0L TSI® turbocharged gasoline engine. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic on 2.5L models. Volkswagen’s acclaimed DSG® 6-speed dual-clutch transmission will be offered on the TDI Clean Diesel and 2.0L TSI turbocharged gasoline models, while a 6-speed manual will come standard.

The 2012 Beetle 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel is the most fuel-efficient Beetle ever. The quiet, four cylinder 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel engine produces 140 hp and 236 lb.-ft of torque. It meets all U.S. emission limits and offers manufacturer estimates of 40 mpg highway, 29 mpg city, and 33 mpg combined.

Fuel economy values are also improved up to 10 percent over prior 2.5L five cylinder engine models. Mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, it offers manufacturer estimates of 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The optional 6-speed automatic offers manufacturer estimates of 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway. The five cylinder engine produces 170 hp and 177 lb.-ft of torque.

The Beetle 2.0L TSI is the sportiest model offered. With 200 hp and 207 lb.-ft of torque, power delivery will remain smooth and direct across the rpm range. The four cylinder turbo engine is estimated to provide 30 mpg highway fuel economy. To ensure that power is applied properly in challenging conditions, the 2.0L TSI model features the XDS® cross differential (limited-slip) system. The system electronically monitors input from various wheel sensors and, in the event of slippage, transfers extra torque to the wheel or wheels with the most traction.

Premium Features

The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle will be available in two trim lines “Design” and “Sport.” Each has a unique character. The Beetle can also be customized with a wide choice of optional features. Key features include:

Radio-CD and radio-navigation systems. Standard in the Beetle is the RCD 310 sound system with 8 speakers (includes dual tuner). The premium VIII top audio system is the RCD 510 with integrated CD changer, interface for SD cards and touchscreen. Fender Premium Audio System. The 2012 Beetle will also offer concert quality sound with an optional Fender Premium Audio System equipped with an additional subwoofer and 400 watts of output power. Embedded in the vehicle design is proprietary Panasonic® speaker technology. The system covers the cabin with directional sound from front door speakers that generate imaging beyond the capabilities of traditional speaker designs. It cuts through the noise and other distractions with front dual voice coil speakers, with extended range for all musical genres. Those choosing this sound system also receive adjustable interior ambiance lighting.

Keyless Access. Volkswagen’s automatic keyless entry and starting system, which allows the driver to operate without a door or ignition key,is appearing for the first time in the Beetle. When one of the front door handles is touched, the system detects access authorization from a transmitter, then unlocks the Beetle and starts the engine with the push of a button.

BI-XENONTM headlights and LED daytime running lights. For the first time, the Beetle will be offered with Bi-xenon headlights. These will be available on future Beetle models, framing the xenon module on the outer perimeters of the headlights and serving as the daytime running lights and parking lights.

Safety

The 2012 Beetle features both active and passive safety. It includes Volkswagen’s advanced Intelligent Crash Response System, which initiates automatic safety protection in some types of collisions — the electrical supply to the fuel pump is shut off, the doors unlock and the hazard lights switch on. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is standard, as are driver and front passenger airbags and Side Curtain Protection® airbags in front and rear.

The 21st Century Beetle is also covered under the no-charge Carefree Maintenance Program. All scheduled maintenance is covered for the length of the New Vehicle Warranty – three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first. The expressive exterior design of the BMW 328 Hommage depicts the modern interpretation of a highly emotional and dynamic two-seater Roadster - just like the BMW 328 75 years ago.

In keeping with its role model, the BMW 328 Hommage has a streamlined design and is clearly recognizable as a sports car. Precise lines run across all of the car body's taut surfaces.

As a result, a subtle contrast between the tense surfaces and the sharp edges is created within the flat, dynamic silhouette. Like the first BMW 328 test vehicles, with which the model celebrated its triumphant debut on the racetrack in 1938, then going on to gain a number of further successes, the BMW 328 Hommage has no doors. Then as now, deep recesses allow access to the inside of the car. The extremely wide and flat front end is strongly three-dimensional, generous surfaces and concise lines give the front end a powerful appearance.

Viewed from the front, the CFRP bonnet appears to encompass the vehicle from above. It embraces the vehicle, framing the slightly set back front end in a very distinctive downward sweep.

Due to the almost vertical, low-reaching sidewalls, it simultaneously emphasizes the BMW 328 Hommage's excellent stability on the road. As a result, the vehicle appears to be even flatter and more dynamic as a whole. Under the bonnet, further surfaces rise to embed the top and bottom of the distinctive kidney grille, whilst folding themselves around it to shape the adjacent air intakes.

Openings and large air intakes create visual lightness at the front, simultaneously demonstrating the high air requirement of the powerful three-liter, six-cylinder engine. Three-dimensionally designed lattices inside the front vents form a connection between the headlamps and the kidney grille, with the three-dimensional lattice structure acting as an accentuating feature.

Aston Martin Racing announced the new Vantage GT3 race car, based on the V12 Vantage road car, which will be ready for competition in 2012.

The Vantage GT3 will replace the DBRS9, launched in 2006 at Le Mans, and which has since seen 26 chassis built and raced to multiple victories in national and international series across the world most recently winning in the Australian GT at Mount Panorama in October last year and achieving a podium finish at Zolder last week. New headlight bezels, re-styled sills, silver brake calipers, 20-spoke diamond turned alloy wheels and clear rear light lenses complete the external revisions.

Under the skin the DB9's passive damping system has been replaced by a new Adaptive Damping System (ADS), which offers enhanced ride comfort together with sharper handling when switched to Sport mode. The ADS system is offered as standard equipment across the DB9 range, encompassing both Coupe and Volante (convertible). A new tire pressure monitoring system, a revised Bluetooth microphone system and the addition of a new Double Apex alloy finish trim and Bang & Olufsen hi-fi options broaden the DB9's specification.

Aston Martin Racing has unveiled the DBRS9, a competition car for club and national racing series, and a bridge for teams and drivers looking towards international GT racing.

The DBRS9 is based on the DB9 road car, but shares many design features from the full GT1 specification DBR9. It uses the road car’s aluminium bonded chassis with a DBR9-based roll cage.

Aston Martin Racing's engineers have tuned the standard 12 cylinder, six litre engine to produce approximately 550bhp and reduced the overall weight by 480kg, to increase the power to weight ratio to nearly 430 bhp/tonne. Much of this is down to the extensive use of carbon composite materials for all the body panels and on the interior trim, as well as polycarbonate side and rear windows.

The DBRS9 has a six-speed H-pattern gearbox with new, shorter ratios for competition use, which can be upgraded to a full sequential racing box. The car’s ride has been lowered and the double wishbone suspension has been rose jointed and fitted with two-way adjustable Koni dampers and stiffened competition springs.

While Aston Martin Racing's focus has been to optimise the DBRS9's performance, it has also been designed with practicality in mind. Both the seat and steering wheel are easily adjustable, and there is the option of a passenger seat, for demonstration drives. Removable body panels, a modular chassis and a package of spares simplify service and maintenance.

''There are many people who want to race Aston Martins competitively in everything from the occasional track day to weekend club or national series races.'' said David Richards of Aston Martin Racing. ''The DBRS9 opens GT racing up to more enthusiasts and with its levels of performance will offer aspiring racing drivers the experience of a GT racing car without the complexity associated with running a full GT1 car.''

The DBRS9 will start at 175 000 GBP plus options and taxes. The cars will be built to order at Aston Martin Racing’s headquarters in Banbury, UK with first deliveries expected later in 2005.

2010 Aston Martin V8 Vantage

Aston Martin is preparing to launch an updated V8 Vantage range for 2010. The beady-eyed spies at CAR UK caught a suspicious-looking blue model badged as a V8 but dressed in part like the V12 running around near the company's Gaydon, Warwickshire headquarters.

It turns out it was a 2010 MY test unit. Changes made include a magnum silver bonnet, new optional 10-spoke forged 19-inch alloy wheels with diamond turned and silver finish, and clear rear lights. The interior can be specified with new optional lightweight seats with kevlar and carbon fibre construction. Weight savings from these amount to 17kg (37 lbs). There is also an optional 1,000W B&O hi-fi system to suit every musical taste.

Through transmission ratio alterations and software remapping the 2010 V8 Vantage is said to emit an average of 315g/km in C02 gases, down from 328g/km. With the Sportshift gearbox that figure drops even further to 300g/km.

Orders are being accepted right now, with first deliveries only expected early next year. V8 Vantage Coupe prices will start at £83,191 (US$134,950) and at £91,021 (US$147,650) for the Roadster.

2011 McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren revealed today the first details on their first supercar, created 100% independent of their old Mercedes partners. The car seems to land directly from the Formula 1 race circuit. It comes with technologies tested by the Mclaren engineers on the race circuit, but also with a design that makes it impossible not to be noticed on the streets.

The MP4-12C name pays tribute to the legendary 1981 Formula 1 MP4/1, that during the years become a legend in the Formula 1. The McLaren MP4-12C is a high performance two-seat mid-engine model that will go on sale in early 2011 at a price ranging from £125,000 and £175,000.

The supercar is powered by a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 engine producing around 600 horsepower and 433 lb-ft of torque. The engine is coupled to a McLaren seven speed Seamless Shift dual clutch gearbox (SSG). It sprints from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3,5 seconds and can hit a top speed of more than 200mph.

Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE

Mazda Motor Corporation today announced that it has built the first Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE vehicle with Norwegian specifications, developed specifically for participation in HyNor, Norway’s national hydrogen project. The first unit will take part in ceremonies marking the official opening of HyNor’s hydrogen filling stations. The initial opening ceremony will be held in Oslo on May 11, 2009. The RX-8 Hydrogen RE will then undergo certification to meet local standards and will be used for maintenance staff training. Mazda plans to commence leasing of Norwegian specification RX-8 Hydrogen RE models in Norway in summer 2009.

Unlike the RX-8 Hydrogen RE currently being leased in Japan, the HyNor-specification Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE is based on the latest European-specification Mazda RX-8 with left-hand drive and a manual transmission.

The HyNor project aims to enable hydrogen vehicles to travel along a 580-kilometer stretch of highway by establishing a chain of hydrogen stations between Stavanger and Oslo in Norway. Mazda agreed to collaborate with HyNor on the project in November 2007 and began validation of the RX-8 Hydrogen RE’s driving performance on Norwegian public roads in October 2008.

And the new XJ doesn’t just look streamlined: it shares a drag coefficient of 0.29 with the XF saloon, making them the most aerodynamic Jaguars ever.

The all-new XJ delivers a driving experience that is just as memorable as the car’s appearance. 2009 Scion iQ concept

Scion unveiled a special concept version of the iQ micro-subcompact car designed to meet the transportation needs of young urban trendsetters. Scion’s iQ concept is a new urban vehicle with a revolutionary package that is just over 10 feet in length and accommodates three plus luggage. As more and more urban centers are revitalized with a new sense of purpose, energy, and creativity, young people are moving in from the suburbs to embrace new urbanism and are looking for a car that suits their needs and delivers high emotional value.

Scion’s iQ concept is the intelligent answer to this need for highly emotional and efficient urban transportation. The convenience of having work, entertainment and culture nearby for young city-dwellers is a significant draw to urban centers. The vehicle must be able to navigate narrow, congested streets, park in tight places, have impressive fuel economy, and have compelling design and function. “Scion’s iQ concept turns traditional auto design upside down,” said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. “Traditionally small vehicles have been thought of as being basic. Five Axis of Huntington Beach, Calif. took the iQ to the next level with aggressive exterior and interior modifications that show the vehicle’s potential for personalization. With its 78.7-inch wheelbase, the three-door hatchback can deftly maneuver through city traffic. At the same time, its overall length of 126.9-inches, overall width of 71.4-inches, and short front and rear overhangs allow the iQ to fit in virtually any city parking space. The front-mounted differential and repositioned steering rack decrease front end length. In addition, the iQ is equipped with a flat gas tank housed beneath the floor that reduces rear overhang.

Pushing the wheels of the small, bold concept towards the four corners of the body gives the iQ a confident stance. The custom 18-inch wheels with a nickel finish and wide tires fill the wheel well, adding to its surefootedness. The iQ’s custom front air dam, aero headlamps and high-intensity LED driving lamps signal urban road readiness. “We believe the Scion iQ micro-subcompact concept is the future of transportation,” said Hollis. “If it should join our future line-up, I think it could reach iconic status like our xB. Its styling will attract attention and if it’s a Scion, you know it’ll be easy to personalize.” The iQ’s profile is defined by a strong and high beltline.

2011 Ford Mustang V6

For 2011, Mustang’s new 3.7-liter Duratec 24-valve V-6 uses advanced engineering to deliver its power and economy: Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) adjusts the valvetrain in microseconds. Aluminum construction means light weight. It’s an engine designed to crank out torque down low, rev to 7,000 rpm and deliver the mechanical music sports coupe lovers crave everywhere in between.

2010 Audi R8 Spyder

The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro makes a powerful statement. The sculptured lines of the emotion-packed, high-performance sports car are a fascinating and unique interpretation of its dynamism. Unlike the Coupé, the Spyder does not have sideblades behind the doors. The side panels and the large cover over the storage compartment for the cloth top are made of a carbon fiber composite. Two arched cowls, which extend to the spoiler lip and include large, integrated air vents, give the rear of the open-top two-seater a powerful profile.

Like every open-top Audi, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro has a cloth top – an uncompromising solution for a high-performance sports car. The soft top’s approximate weight is a mere 30 kilograms (66.14 lb); it thus keeps the vehicle’s total weight and center of gravity low. The top takes up little space when open and is a harmonious design element when closed. It tapers off to two slim fins extending to the trailing edge of the car, emphasizing the elongated silhouette.

The electrohydraulic soft top opens and closes in 19 seconds, even while driving at speeds up to 50 km/h (31.07 mph). When opened, it folds like a Z into its storage compartment over the V10 engine. The compartment cover opens and closes automatically. The heated glass window, which is separate from the cloth top, is lowered into the bulkhead. It can be independently raised and lowered at the press of a switch, with the top up or down. An additional net-like wind deflector comes standard and can be latched into the bulkhead behind the seats in two easy steps.

The top, which comprises an outer skin of a leakproof textile fabric and the headliner, is fully compatible with high-speed driving. When driving at moderate speeds with the top up, interior noise levels in the R8 Spyder are barely higher than in the Coupé. The bulkhead includes integrated rollover protection in the form of two strong, spring-tensioned plates. Head/thorax side bags in the backrests protect the passengers in the event of a side impact. Full-size airbags stand at the ready in the event of a head-on collision. In a rear-end collision, the integral head restraint system reduces the risk of whiplash injuries.

In the version with manual transmission, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro weighs only 1,720 kilograms thanks primarily to its aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) body. Despite reinforcements in the area of the sills, the center tunnel, the rear wall, the floor pan and the A- and B-pillars, the body weighs only 216 kilograms (476.2 lb) – just 6 kilograms (13.23 lb) more than that of the R8 Coupé. The high stiffness of the ASF body, which includes an integrated engine frame of ultra-lightweight magnesium, provides the foundation for the car’s dynamic handling and superior safety.

2011 Infiniti M35 Hybrid

Infiniti today confirmed that its first production hybrid vehicle will be part of the recently announced line of 2011 Infiniti M luxury performance sedans, which are scheduled to go on sale in spring 2010 at Infiniti dealers nationwide. The Infiniti M35 hybrid is expected to arrive about 12 months later as a 2012 model. It is Infiniti’s first hybrid in its 20-year existence, as well as the cleanest and most economical car in Infiniti’s history.

Realizing the high performance/low emissions promise of the recent Infiniti Essence concept car, the M35 Hybrid has been designed and engineered to add to, not take away from, the driving experience, a key part of any Infiniti’s appeal. The M35 Hybrid is based on the all-new M, which itself picks up styling cues from Essence, the show-stopper that made its debut at the Geneva Auto Show early in 2009.

The M35 Hybrid maintains a high performance luxury sedan profile, overlaying it with the fuel economy and CO2 emissions of a smaller car, while delivering driving flair to please any enthusiast – complete with charismatic V6 and rear-wheel drive handling.

Infiniti’s hybrid system, developed solely within Infiniti’s parent group, is a single electric motor/twin clutch arrangement. Innovatively, the first clutch is installed between the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 and the electric motor. The result of this configuration, where all components act on a single prop shaft to the rear differential, is a consistent driving feel under all conditions with linear performance and the “direct responses” that the engineers sought.

The electric motor acts as both propulsion unit, boosting the V6 in “power assist” mode when maximum acceleration is required, and also as a generator. Along with charging the battery in the normal way, the motor recovers energy otherwise lost during deceleration and braking.

The M Hybrid can also run solely on its electric motor in certain driving conditions, furthering fuel efficiency and optimizing energy usage across the widest possible range of driving conditions. Details of driving range, performance and transmission will be released later.

As expected of Infiniti, several new technologies are introduced in the new M35 Hybrid, including a “laminated” lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack that is the same size as conventional batteries but offers twice the power. Lamination enhances the pack’s cooling performance, while temperature stability is further improved by the use of manganese positive electrodes. An end result of this is exceptional battery reliability.

The M35 Hybrid joins conventional engine-equipped 2011 M versions – including a new high-performance diesel V6 for Western Europe – as the first Ms to be sold across all of Infiniti’s world markets, currently 33 countries. All of the new-generation Infiniti M models are on target to beat their predecessors on fuel consumption and emissions – despite across-the-board performance improvements – thanks to a range of efficiency-enhancing measures.

2011 Lexus LFA

The LFA marks a watershed point for Lexus – its global debut marks the spectacular arrival of a new flagship for the F portfolio of Lexus performance models. A Lexus that single-handedly creates new boundaries to redefine the supercar for the 21st Century.

“From the very beginning of automobile history, supercars have represented dreams, hopes and aspirations,” explained Haruhiko Tanahashi, chief engineer of the LFA’s development program. “For Lexus, a brand that aims to provide customers enlightened moments and memorable experiences, the development of a world-class supercar was an indispensable next step”.

That indispensable next step centered on the creation of a supercar that would deliver the supreme driving experience. To achieve this uncompromising goal, Tanahashi and his team created the LFA from scratch – a true clean-sheet design. And in a radical departure from standard Lexus development practice, they approached the LFA from a non-traditional angle, pushing their technological, material and engineering boundaries at every step.

The result is the rear-wheel drive LFA, a dynamically styled supercar powered by a sophisticated new high-revving 4.8-liter V10 engine that generates 552 hp (412kW/560DIN hp) and 354 lb-ft (480Nm) of torque for adrenaline-fuelled 202 mph (325km/h) performance. This specially-developed powerplant is hooked up to a unique six-speed Automated Sequential Gearbox (ASG) with paddle shifters for ultimate driver control. Linked by a rigid torque tube for excellent drivetrain integrity, the ASG is located in a transaxle layout over the rear axle for an optimal 48:52 front-to-rear weight distribution.

Lightweight, powerful and balanced, the Lexus features advanced Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) construction for its chassis and bodywork to deliver a light, incredibly strong and impact-resistant structure. Rather than out-source this sophisticated materials technology, in a radical move, the LFA team developed its own CFRP processes internally for ultimate quality control and to make a sound engineering investment in the future.

Motorsport-developed lightweight aluminum alloy suspension component is complemented by Carbon Ceramic Material (CCM) brake discs and an innovative electrically assisted rack and pinion steering. The LFA driver sits in low-slung cabin that is as painstakingly constructed as it is driver focused, with every key control perfectly positioned and every creature comfort catered for.

Ferrari 458 Italia

The 458 Italia is the latest incarnation of the mid-rear engined berlinetta and will be unveiled at the next Frankfurt Motor Show

While it’s true that every Ferrari is innovative by definition, it’s equally true that in the course of the Prancing Horse’s history, certain cars have marked a genuine departure from the current range. This is very much the case with the Ferrari 458 Italia, which is a massive leap forward from the company’s previous mid-rear engined sports cars.

The new model is a synthesis of style, creative flair, passion and cutting-edge technology, characteristics for which Italy as a nation is well-known. For this reason Ferrari chose to add the name of its homeland to the traditional figure representing the displacement and number of cylinders.

The Ferrari 458 Italia is a completely new car from every point of view: engine, design, aerodynamics, handling, instrumentation and ergonomics, just to name a few.

A two-seater berlinetta, the Ferrari 458 Italia, as is now traditional for all Ferrari’s road-going cars, benefits hugely from the company’s Formula 1 experience. This is particularly evident in the speed and precision with which the car responds to driver inputs and in the attention focused on reducing internal friction in the engine for lower fuel consumption than the F430, despite the fact that both overall displacement and power have increased. However, Ferrari’s track experience makes its presence felt in the 458 Italia not only in terms of pure technological transfer but also on a more emotional level, because of the strong emphasis on creating an almost symbiotic relationship between driver and car. The 458 Italia features an innovative driving environment with a new kind of steering wheel and dashboard that is the direct result of racing practice. Once again input from Michael Schumacher - who was involved from the very start of the 458 Italia project - played an invaluable part.

The Ferrari 458 Italia’s Pininfarina design provides further evidence of the complete departure from the past that this new car hails. The Ferrari 458 Italia has a compact, aerodynamic shape, underscoring the concepts of simplicity, efficiency and lightness that inspired the project. As with every Ferrari, the car’s styling has been very heavily influenced by the requirements for aerodynamic efficiency, as can be seen from the downforce of 140 kg at 200km/h generated by the new model. The front features a single opening for the front grille and side air intakes, with aerodynamic sections and profiles designed to direct air to the coolant radiators and the new flat underbody. The nose also sports small aeroelastic winglets which generate downforce and, as speed rises, deform to reduce the section of the radiator inlets and cut drag.

The new 4499 cc V8 is the first Ferrari direct injection engine to be mid-rear mounted. It has a very low piston compression height typical of racing engines which contributed to achieving its compression ratio of 12.5:1. Equipped with the traditional flat-plane crankshaft, the engine delivers 570 CV at 9000 rpm and, with an outstanding power output of 127 CV/litre, sets a new benchmark not only for the whole Ferrari range and the history of company, but also for the entire market segment. Maximum torque is 540 Nm at 6000 rpm, over 80 per cent of which is available from 3250 rpm. Specific torque is a record 120 Nm/litre. However, what is truly extraordinary is the amount of torque available while still maintaining high levels of power at low revs.

The car’s soundtrack is also typical Ferrari, with an exciting, powerful growl emerging from the engine before it channels through to the exhaust’s three rear tailpipes.

The 458 Italia is equipped with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission which increases performance whilst providing very smooth shifts even at full throttle. The engineers have developed specific, sportier gear ratios to match the power and torque curves of the new V8, guaranteeing high torque even at lower engine speeds and allowing the car to reach its maximum speed in top gear.

This new Ferrari is also a major leap forward when it comes to cutting emissions. Despite the fact that the new engine is significantly more powerful than the V8s that preceded it, the Ferrari 458 Italia produces just 320 g/km of CO2 and fuel consumption is 13.7 l/100 km (combined cycle), the best in the entire segment.

The engineers also focused on weight reduction during the design phase for similar reasons. Consequently, the Ferrari 458 Italia has a dry weight of 1380 kg with a power-to-weight ratio of 2.42 kg/CV. Weight distribution is also optimal with 58 per cent over the rear axle. The result of the engineers’ endeavours can be summed up in to two simple statistics which together perfectly encapsulate the Ferrari 458 Italia’s exceptional performance: 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 3.4 seconds and a maximum speed in excess of 325 km/h.

For the new chassis, once more in aluminium, Maranello’s engineers incorporated various types of advanced alloys along with aerospace industry-derived manufacturing and bonding techniques.

With regard to vehicle dynamics, the Ferrari 458 Italia’s suspension features twin wishbones at the front and a multi-link set-up at the rear tuned for maximum roadholding and superlative handling. Along with a more direct steering ratio, the 458 Italia thus offers extremely rapid turn-in and body control whilst maintaining superior ride comfort.

The integration of the E-Diff and F1-Trac (now controlled by the same ECU) and their respective mappings is even greater, resulting in a 32 per cent increase in longitudinal acceleration out of corners compared to previous models. The evolution of the control logic, with even faster and more accurate calculation of levels of grip, ensures even greater roadholding, better handling and ease of control on the limit.

The same ECU also governs the high-performance ABS, providing even more precise control over the logic threshold and greater efficiency. The brakes also feature a prefill function whereby the pistons in the callipers move the pads into contact with the discs on lift off to minimise delay in the brakes being applied. This combined with the ABS has cut the 100-0 km/h braking distance to a mere 32.5 metres.

The Ferrari 458 Italia’s interior is another area of the car that exalts its sporty personality. The driver is welcomed by a new layout and a revolutionary ergonomic interface where the main controls are all clustered on the steering wheel.

With the Ferrari 458 Italia, Maranello has brought a highly distinctive new car to its 8-cylinder range. The company now offers two models that share a common, race-derived DNA, both exceptionally sporty and fun to drive in true Ferrari tradition, but aimed at two very different kinds of client. While the Ferrari California was created for owners requiring a more versatile sports car with a practical edge, the 458 Italia is designed for owners for whom the priority is uncompromising on-road performance with occasional track day capability, but who still demand a car that is useable in day-to-day driving like all Ferrari’s recent models.

Aston Martin One-77

The Aston Martin One-77 has been a long time coming. The super-expensive British supercar has been teased and teased, Aston even having gone so far as showing the car's form on the auto show circuit, only leaving it under a cloth throughout the show. Aston Martin set up a dedicated website for the most powerful production Aston Martin ever, which can still be found at www.one-77.com. In March we got One-77 technical specs and pre-production performance numbers. Now the cat is finally out of the bag, with Aston's showing of the final One-77 production car design at the Italian Concorso D’Eleganza Villa D’Este design-centric autoshow.

Carrying a base price of a cool EU 1 million and headed for final production in a limited run of only 77 units, the One-77 is undoubtedly targeted at the type of attention-seeking car customer probably not too affected by the global economic recession currently gripping the auto industry as a whole.

Aston Martin's full design muscle was directed toward the One-77's development, being the first truly all-new Aston model in years. The proof is in the pudding, as the Aston Martin One-77 production model just won one of the industry's most coveted design awards, the Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award for Concept Cars and Prototypes at Como Lake, Italy.

Let's talk numbers. The One-77 carries a 6.0 liter V12 tightly based on the powerplants used in the V12 Vanquish and newer V12 Vantage, but reengineered completely for this application to produce more than 700 horsepower. Aston Martin says the One-77 was developed with DTM series race cars in mind, and if the new supercar proves as capable on the road as it looks on paper, those 77 examples should be snapped up real quick.

All that power is thrust upon the poor rear wheels through a new 6 speed true sequential manual unit Aston promises will trickle down through the rest of its product line. The striking 20 inch wheels, carrying huge Pirellis 335mm across out back, wrap new Carbon Ceramic Matrix brake technology which promises increased cooling by transmitting less kinetic energy as heat through the brake fluid and system.

With a promised curb weight of around 1500kg, the One-77 will do the 0-60 run in less than 3.5 seconds, with a top speed in excess of 200 mph. Due to the car's rarity, expense and beauty, your average Aston Martin One-77 owner will probably never have enough road to hit 150 let alone 200 mph or a race track. In an auto industry finding 100-year-old companies suddenly going bankrupt, is the One-77 at all relevant?

Official Aston Martin press documents speak of "extraordinary workmanship and money-no-object commitment to quality". It is a safe bet Aston will lose money on this car, but if the British marque can financially weather this storm and continue to make truly exceptional sports and GT cars, the real winners are the well-heeled enthusiast community. 2009 Ferrari 599XX Prototype

The Ferrari 599XX, now in concept stage but nearing production as a special Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano high-performance variant, is perhaps more exciting than even the hallowed Ferrari Enzo in the track performance department. While the Ferrari Enzo earns the highest marks for exclusivity and sharp-creased style, the 599XX looks like a Ferrari is expected to but taken up about 7 notches. The Fiorano on which the bold new Ferrari 599XX track car is based is not the most expensive Prancing Pony, but it is certainly the most exciting large production model from a driver's standpoint.

The 599XX is officially labeled a prototype, but industry rumors have pointed toward the new razor-sharp Ferrari track car seeing a very limited production run to "loyal Ferrari customers" or some such thing. While the engine and transmission are the same basic units found in the 599 GTB, Ferrari has raised the redline all the way up to 9000 rpm, with some new internals allowing a power increase to a cold 700 horses.

Carbon fiber is used extensively in the 599XX, even underhood, where carbon intakes and other bits save weight and add a little visual flair. The F1-style transmission also gets a reprogramming, with shift times now coming in a miniscule 60 ms, far quicker than even the most skilled clutch-and-lever operator.

The 599XX, which should be getting an official production announcement sometime in the near future, rides on 19 inch racing slicks and also a dedicated suspension different from that employed in standard 599 donor cars. Another interesting Ferrari 599XX feature is that even the brake discs are covered in carbon fiber "doughnuts", said to help with both aerodynamics and cooling. Were this not a Ferrari, they could be mistaken for something from the Autozone parts aisle.

Some serious airflow direction tricks are employed. The 599XX features fans in the trunk and synthetic jets along the rear ductwork, and even tiny wings poking out sideways just in front of the C-pillars. Not as extreme as the Enzo, but the 599XX certainly looks ready to take off and fly somewhere. 599XX pricing, if it makes a short production run after all, will be... well, you know.

2009 Gullwing-America 300SL Panamericana

The classic Mercedes-Benz SL Gullwing is one of the most sought-after cars of all time, with its rarity and car collector appeal raising auction prices into the stratosphere. German tuner and coachbuilder Gullwing-AG and its American subsidiary, Gullwing-America, have just announced plans to offer a rebodied and thoroughly modernized variant of the classic SL to customers beginning soon.

To kick off the campaign, Gullwing-America has released images and official specifications for its 2009 Gullwing 300SL Panamericana, and the car is an absolute stunner. The shape clearly follows the most hallowed Benz ever's body lines, also displaying modern touches to go along with the technology within.

The 300SL Panamericana concept car gets a genuine-article Mercedes-Benz engine and driveline, a retuned version of the 5.5 liter 8 cylinder that has seen duty in AMG and SLR McLaren models. For the 300SL Panamericana, the powerplant spits out 370 horsepower and 530 Nm torque @ 5400 rpm.

With a light steel frame and an aluminum-fiberglass body, all that power will not have a whole lot of car to push around, and performance numbers should exceed those of the AMG Benz cars sharing this engine.

For potential 300SL Panamericana buyers who are more interested in looking good than going 200 mph, Gullwing-America will also offer a Mercedes-sourced V6 as an engine choice. Production run will obviously be small, but with several companies building replica and modernized Shelby/AC Cobra cars with modern components, the 300SL Panamericana does have a roadmap for success.

The real test for the fledgling car builder will be to see if the Panamericana has that not-quite-together kit car feel or conversely the spit and polish of a brand new Mercedes-Benz. The real story will probably fall somewhere in between, but we wish this interesting experiment in the cult of car the greatest possible success.

2010 Mercedes-Benz S Class

For many luxury car buyers, a Mercedes-Benz S Class is the ultimate statement of proudly displaying excessive wealth without outright flaunting it. The 2010 Mercedes-Benz S Class is a significant upgrade in a few key areas, including the introduction of an exciting new mild hybrid model, the S400 Hybrid.

With the exception of AMG S Class models, the first-ever Mercedes hybrid S400 is the most exciting if only for its innovative powertrain. The gas portion is a modified version of the V6 used in base model S Class cars, in S400 Hybrid trim outputting 279 horses. Not a lot for a car of this size, but the mild-stage electric motor puts out 160 Nm extra torque during hard acceleration to keep things moving.

Featuring a small lithium ion battery pack and a low power but high torque mild hybrid electric motor, the S400 can run off electricity alone at speeds 9 mph and below, shutting off the primary gas engine as long as there is battery power.

Rounding out the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S Class lineup are 8 engine choices for European customers, not all of which will see American shores. Yankees do get the S600 V12 models for the understated enthusiast rich family set, as well as S63 and S65 AMG models for those who like their oversized luxury sedans with a little more sporting eye candy.

Full details for the AMG models are trickling out, but we do know the top dog S65 AMG model will pack a twin-turbo 6.0 liter 12 cylinder outputting 604 horses and 738 lb-ft of torque, and carry a base price of a stratospheric $202,825. More on the AMG models soon, with all other 2010 S Class models seeing a US release date of August 2009.

2009 Nissan 370Z Roadster

With the introduction of the new 2009 Nissan 370Z at Los Angeles, a redesigned and amped-up version of the convertible variant 2009 Nissan 370Z Roadster was sure to follow. The new Z Roadster is far more attractive than the bulky convertible 350Z from the last generation, and benefits from a whole host of new tech as well.

Like the 2009 370Z coupe, the soft top convertible roadster model actually shrinks a bit in most dimensions from the previous generation car. Wheelbase is pegged at 100.4 inches, down 3.1 inches, while overall length shrinks to 176.2 inches.

The new 370Z Roadster sports a better-excecuted design than the outgoing 350Z model, which sold well but suffered from a hack job leaving it looking unbalanced and... fat. 370Z Roadster models get a more streamlined design that does a better job of calling to mind classic Z cars despite the convertible form factor, and would look right at home sitting next to an Audi TT or BMW Z4.

Powertrain is the same as in the 2009 370Z Coupe, the excellent Nissan corporate 3.7 liter 6 that shares duty in the Infiniti G37 sedan, G Coupe and G convertible. With the displacement bump coming in the new-generation VQ engine, the 2009 370Z Roadster packs 332 horsepower and 270 lb-ft. torque. The new soft-top convertible Roadster also gets the much-lauded new Nissan 6-speed conventional manual with automatic rev matching on downshifts.

None of the first official Nissan 370Z Roadster images show the car's profile with the power soft top raised, so it is hard to say exactly what line it will cut. Previous Z Roadster cars looked downright strange with the top raised, bulky rear end sticking out, so let's hope the total visual package looks as good with the top raised as it does down.

The convertible will be available with a release date of, appropriately enough, this summer. Pricing should be a few grand above the hardtop model, figure around $36,000 to start.

2010 BMW 5 Series

2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI

Subaru has at last revealed details of its hardcore new Impreza WRX STI which is substantially different to the non-turbo five-door models now being delivered to first customers.

And with a heavily-revised new 296 bhp turbocharged 2.5 liter 'boxer' engine, totally new platform and suspension plus even more advanced symmetrical all-wheel drive system, the World Rally Championship look-alike is sure to satisfy Subaru traditionalists.

At the rear, four exhaust pipes twinned in pairs at either side of the body not only give a distinctive look but reduce exhaust air-flow resistance by 38 per cent, increasing power and reducing noise.

Comfort With Agility

The new Impreza WRX STI boasts a much plusher interior than before, offering leather/Alcantara-covered sports seats as standard with Recaro seats as an option. Curtain airbags are standard and the audio system has been upgraded.

The braking system has been developed in conjunction with Italian specialist, Brembo, and features four-pot calipers at the front and twin-pot at the rear - both ventilated discs.

A multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control System allows the driver to select the best setting for the prevalent road conditions. For example, it can be turned off altogether or set to 'Traction' which delays artificial interference.

More Power, More Driver Involvement

The award-winning 2.5 liter horizontally-opposed 'boxer' engine benefits from a thorough revision which includes a larger and more efficient intercooler which increases power.

The new STI also boasts stronger low to mid-speed torque thanks to variable-valve timing for the intake and exhaust system and a fast-warm catalytic converter for reduced emissions.

Power is now 296 bhp at 6,000 rpm with torque of 300 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm.

The much-praised six-speed manual transmission has been revised, with a shorter-throw gear-change and lighter movements, especially from neutral to 1st and 1st to 2nd gear thanks to a revised synchromesh.

A firm favorite with existing STI owners, the Driver's Control Centre Differential has been improved, giving even more choice of handling characteristics.

The DCCD is operated via a switch in the centre console, allowing the driver to manually select the torque distribution front to rear, reverting to automatic mode every time the ignition is switched off.

For example, he or she can choose between having a sharper cornering turn-in or more stable straight-line running.

In Manual Mode, the driver can adjust the front to rear torque distribution through varying degrees to suit different road conditions such as loose gravel or soft snow.

Now, for the new Impreza WRX STI, the DCCD switch also allows the selection of three different types of 'Auto' Mode.

1: Auto Mode is selected when the engine is started and covers most road conditions.
2: Auto+ Mode places the emphasis on traction for slippery roads, sharing out the torque more evenly between all four wheels and enhancing straight-line stability.
3: Auto- Mode increases agility by enhancing steering response through less torque-split interference.

2008 Ford Focus RS WRC

Ford of Europe revealed the exciting new look for its 2008 FIA World Rally Championship campaign as the team was unveiled at the Autosport International Show in Birmingham.

The Focus RS World Rally Car, which powered Ford to the manufacturers' world title in both 2006 and 2007, sports a striking modern livery that took centre stage today at Europe's largest annual motorsport exhibition. It was also announced that the squad will be named the BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team for 2008.

The team's new driver line-up of Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala were joined by Ford of Europe's new motorsport director, Mark Deans, and team director Malcolm Wilson as they revealed the Focus RS WRC's colour scheme for the first time.

"The Focus RS WRC has a new, contemporary livery which blends perfectly with the outlook of the BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team," explained Deans. "This is our first full season in partnership with BP and the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority and their importance to our WRC program is reflected in the team's new name and their prominence on the car.

"Of course, there is far more to a successful WRC campaign than the color of the car and the name of the team. But in the few weeks since I took up my new role as motorsport director I have seen enough to convince me that we are again capable of being fully competitive in 2008. We have a dynamic, young driver line-up supported by one of the most enthusiastic and hard-working teams in motorsport at M-Sport and I look forward to a year that I'm confident will be a successful one," he added.

Deans also sprung a surprise on Wilson, presenting him with a replica of the 2007 FIA World Rally Championship's manufacturers' trophy on behalf of Ford of Europe. "That was a fantastic gesture and one that I really appreciated," said Wilson. "It brought back the memories of what a remarkable year 2007 was for Ford in the WRC.

"But that is history and we're now fully focused on the 2008 season. In Mikko and Jari-Matti we have two young drivers who are hungry for competition but also have experience that belies their years and I'm looking forward to watching them develop further during the season. Abu Dhabi's Khalid Al Qassimi has a comprehensive program of 10 events in a third Focus RS WRC and I hope to see him gain further in both experience and confidence during the year," added Wilson.

The Tesla Motors Model S 4-door sedan has long been in the likely rumor category, but that all changed this week with a surprise official Tesla Model S introduction. Tesla has made big news with its Roadster model, which with over 250 deliveries has been the first real sport standalone electric car model to see mass production.

If the spec sheet put out in an official Tesla press release was from any other car company, it would be unlikely to be taken seriously. Tesla makes some bold claims for the Model S, which has an early estimate on-road date of mid-2011.

The Roadster has done well on the open market for a pure start-up car company, but at $100,000 and with less utility than a Mazda Miata, its hip factor and novelty value have been big selling points. At double the size and half the price, with a more-powerful engine and battery technology that benefits from the many roadbumps in the Roadster program, the Model S will compete well in the emerging electric vehicle segment if it can stay true to early form.

Certain Tesla Model S show car details, like the rather ridiculous 20-inch wheels, probably will not make it onto a car that is supposed to be all about efficiency. Still, the Model S electric sedan has all the goods where it counts, and new technologies may allow the first affordable all-electric family sedan to see the light of day to be a big hit for fledgling Tesla Motors.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

Want a recipe for a super-exciting four door sport sedan? Drop in a handbuilt AMG powerplant from your most expensive sports car into the otherwise-tame 4 door E-Class, boost the suspension and slow-down-and-stop, add some bling and call it a day. The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG gets the same powerplant as AMG's own SL63, and on-road experience in the latter car shows this motor is truly breathtaking.

Say what you will about the new 2010 E-Class's styling, but in AMG trim the rather ordinary new E gets its chance to look good for the cameras, if you manage to catch one on the road going slowly enough to get a good look.

The E63 AMG is more than a new body and a big motor, and seems to have received the little touches that will allow it to finally compete with the best from BMW and Audi in the driving dynamics department. The E AMG no longer uses a torque converter psuedo-manual, canning that outdated technology in favor of a 7-speed automanual featuring a wet-sump clutch constantly submerged in an oil bath for smooth shifts and protection against wear.

The E63 suspension system is completely revised, with a new steel-springed strut setup up front and an AMG-specific air suspension out back, with all the expected launch and stability controls and other annoyances. Thankfully, the nannies can be sent home for the most part when the 2010 E63 AMG is put into sport mode.

Deliveries for the latest and greatest E-Class begin this August in Europe, with a US release date quick to follow in November 2009. Base price info has not yet been released, but expect something in the $70,000-$85,000 range.

2009 Mazda RX-8

Launched in 2003, the Mazda RX-8 hit the global market with a serious bang. For 2009, Mazda will further the evolution of the four-door, four-seater sports coupe, giving RX-8 a refreshed exterior and interior design, enhanced performance and a new R3 sport package for the ultimate driving enthusiast.

Unchanged is the core of the RX-8 - a high-powered, lightweight and perfectly balanced machine powered by the world-renowned twin-rotor RENESIS rotary engine.

Performance Innovation

Through-and-through, the RX-8 is a pure sports car that gives the driver an exciting and dynamic experience. For 2009, engineers improved RX-8 body rigidity through the addition of structural reinforcements, by adding a trapezoidal strut tower bar and enhancing the local rigidity of the front suspension tower areas. Also, the rear suspension geometry has been reconfigured for better handling performance and driveshaft rigidity is improved, lowering NVH levels and improving performance.

In addition, the differential gear ratio on manual transmission-equipped cars is lowered from 4.444 to 4.777 for improved off-the-line performance. While minimal, these performance changes give RX-8 increased acceleration and performance, as well as even greater responsiveness to the accelerator pedal - always a rotary-engine and RX-8 hallmark.

To achieve this sophisticated dynamic, Mazda utilizes the advanced RENESIS (Rotary Engine genesis - or rebirth of the rotary engine) engine. The Mazda RX-8 remains the only mass-produced rotary-powered passenger car in the world. While exhibiting unusually high power output for a naturally aspirated engine, RENESIS outstrips comparable reciprocating engines in terms of acceleration, the feeling of power in reserve and quick response.

The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is available as either a 232-horsepower model fitted with a six-speed manual transmission, or a 212-horsepower model fitted with a six-speed Sport A/T automatic with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for a Formula 1-style driving experience.

Ultimate Performance: R3 Package

2010 BMW X6 M

BMW has finally made official the long-rumored M versions of the X5 and X6 "Sports Activity Vehicles". Of the two new power 'utes, which are closest competitors to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, the 2010 BMW X6 M is the more exciting, with its rakish shape and a brand new BMW M Power engine finally packing enough ponies to give the X6 its day in the sun.

BMW M Power models have always been about so much more than straight-line speed, so to make the 2010 X6 M a well-rounded car with enough capabilities in the twisties to justify its lineage was part of the deal. The torque distribution and suspension systems that debuted on the X6 did not need a whole lot of modification to be up to the M challenge, but early drive reports should confirm that BMW has really gone the extra mile here.

The first turbo M motor ever

The M engine in question, a brand new twin-Garett-turbo packing 4.4 liter V8, is an evolution of the naturally aspirated V8 used in X5 and X6 models. The 8 marks the first time a BMW M Model has received any type of force feeding. Output is pegged at 555 horses, which is not-so-coincidentally 5 more horsepower than the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.

Torque is rated at 500 lb-ft., nothing crazy by the X6 M's competitor standards, but the innovative turbocharging system BMW has developed should make sure all that thrust is available at a moment's notice with little-to-no turbo lag.

A complex intake and exhaust management system BMW is calling Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM) makes sure that reused exhaust gases are passed through the turbo system and back into the manifold with every cylinder rotation rather than in the waves of power found in conventional turbos. The result is a promised constant stream of boost, and at 21 PSI there's plenty of it.

To prepare for all that boost, BMW has beefed up the new 4.4's internals dramatically. 4.5 super-smooth seconds through 60 mph tell the tale that such a heavy and tall monstrosity has true sporting potential.

Price info has not been finalized. The Cayenne Turbo runs a hair under $100,000 to start, so expect something in the $90,000s.

2010 BMW X5 M

Hot on the heels of the announcement of the brand new M Power version of its X6 SUV, BMW has released full photos and details for its other new high-flying sport 'ute, based of the latest generation of X5. The 2010 X5 M (thank a certain snarky little Mazda roadster for the confusing nomenclature) has the same powertrain as the X6 M, but based on its structure and interior it is a bit of a different beast.

The X6 M is a little lighter and seats 4 in comfort, while the X5 M seats 5 with a bit more total interior and cargo space. The tradeoff should be a slight bit of performance and a more traditional, boxy shape. With the new gaping front air dams and tasteful aerodynamics on an already very good looking car, the 2010 X5 M is the much more attractive of the two.

In the powertrain department, the 2010 BMW X5 M gets an identical drivetrain, the new twin turbocharged V8 developed fresh for the M models and a very nice electronic AWD system with all the expected torque-splitting capabilities. The power management system is based tightly from the xDrive system in standard X5 and X6 models, but has been tuned for driving performance at the expense of a little comfort, and to stand up to all that extra twist.

BMW's X5 received a complete redesign a couple of years ago, growing a bit and really coming into its own as the leader of the luxury SUV segment. The M Sport bits go well here, BMW carries over the M theme from its 3 and 5 series, leaving the exterior of the car mostly unchanged and highlighted by tasteful M bits rather than being overburdended by too many sporty design details.

The X5 M will likely be a few thousand less than the X6, slotting it in at a base price that early reports peg at $90,0000. That's a lot of bread for a strange breed of car, but if Porsche Cayenne sales are any indication there is a real market for scary AWD highway eating monsters.

The just-finalized 2010 VW GTI, which is MkVI in the iconic little Volkswagen hatch's long and illustrious history, stays true to the classic GTI formula while receiving some tricky modern technology and a brand-new turbocharged inline 4 derivitave of recent Audi engines with serious gusto.

Perhaps most exciting to Volkswagen GTI enthusiasts is the new suspension, struts up front and multilink out back with standard anti-roll bars and a first-ever XDS electronically controlled differential with the ability to redistribute torque between the front wheels and apply braking force as necessary to keep the 2010 VW GTI MkVI glued to the road at speed.

Despite the standard 2010 GTI MkVI being FWD-only, early media drive reports point to torque steer and wheelspin at launch being well controlled. The new GTI gets an outstanding 38.7 mpg highway through the more liberal EU method, which should translate to around 30 combined mpg by EPA estimates. Seriously efficient numbers for a true driver's car that can run backroads with any car you'll see on a daily basis.

An attractive interior with available fancy plaid seatbacks, MkI GTI style, houses the driver in a focused and comfortable climate. Transmission choices are a 6 speed standard manual, or a new paddle-shifted DSG true automated manual never before offered in the Golf line.

The DSG option features two automatic shift programs, standard and sport. The sport mode holds gears all the way to redline if the accelerator is depressed, while the economy mode is said to let go of gears a little too early. To get the most out of a lightweight hot hatch with modest but usable power, the 6 speed option should be the obvious choice.

MkVI Volkswagen GTI exterior styling is not all that different from the last generation, though the car is a little lower and wider. The GTI line has always managed to look faster and classier than its price point would suggest, inside and out, and the 2010 model is no exception.

The car is nothing if not simple and beautiful, just like how the original MkI VW GTI engineers envisioned 36 years ago.

2009 NISMO 370Z

Fresh off its Los Angeles Auto Show introduction and putting up decent sales despite tough car industry times, the Nissan 370Z has already received factory performance tuning in the form of the hot new 2009 NISMO 370Z. The NISMO treatment extends from the motor and driveshaft to a focused new interior and exterior.

From the outside, the second-gen official factory turnkey NISMO Z looks significantly different from other models. The body is widened slightly to accomodate the new RAYS wheels custom designed for NISMO, but looks even wider with the sharply creased front air dam and skirts.

From a reflashed and much-stiffened suspension to a dedicated NISMO 6 speed manual and carbon fiber driveshaft, the new NISMO Z is track ready as soon as you drive off the lot, and yet Nissan NISMO still promises every day drivability.

Power goes up to 350 at the crank, with torque rising a bit to 276 lb-ft. @ 5200 rpm. Redline goes up a bit as well due to the ECU reprogram, and the power band now tops out at a respectable 7400 rpm.

Inside the 2009 NISMO Z gets a single interior option with all the expected ammenities in a NISMO-splashed and driver focused cabin. Red piping accents the seats and trim, and the cluster is unique to Nissan's motorsports division.

The new NISMO Z will bow in June in the United States, with a Japanese release potentially even a little earlier. Pricing should be a right around $40,000 to keep the 2009 Nissan NIZMO Z not too far above the Evo-WRX set it should seek to woo.

2010 Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss

The Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss, the final hurrah for the fabled SLR line, has a production date of June 2009 and is the culmination of everything SLR. The SLR Stirling Moss has a radical design, with no roof or even proper windshield. It is as if Mercedes-Benz is flaunting the fact that all SLR drivers own a couple more cars, and the retro race-roadster design is the only thing they could respectfully apply legendary British race car driver Stirling Moss's name to.

Stirling Moss--the car--is styled unlike anything else on the market, even from boutique car builders. It looks every bit the modern interpretation of the classic race speedster Mercedes is going for, and while the modern SLR McLaren heritage is clear, this new edition is wholly different. While the new open supercar Mercedes was again developed in conjunction with McLaren, this one drops the McClaren name in favor of honoring the most famous of Benz pilots.

SLR Stirling Moss Styling - Rolling Sculpture and Totally Unique Supercar

Mercedes-Benz rather curious decision to fit the SLR Stirling Moss with neither a front windshield nor side windows seems like a strange one on a supercar capable of more than 200 mph. Only two tiny front wind deflectors--less than two centimeters tall, Mercedes-Benz reminds us--protect driver and passenger from wind, dust, tiny chunks of asphalt, etc. Helmets will be required for serious high speed driving, but just think how cool and classy you can look with a vintage Stirling Moss SLR 300-style racing helmet!

Only a roofless, windowless car can get away with the huge air scoops aft of the rear seats, which also serve SLR Stirling Moss driver and passenger safety with integrated roll bars. The car's drastic styling, when compared side-by-side with the famous SLR 300 race cars of the 1950s, does its namesake justice. The SLR Stirling Moss will be the culmination of production for the SLR line, and will see a worldwide release of 75 units. Just 75.

Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss price sits at EUR 750,000 or approximately USD $1.05 million, and good luck getting one, even if you have that kind cash. This thing is inevitably destined to fetch many millions at the Pebble Beach auctions of the future. Availability at launch will be only to European current customers of Mercedes-Benz.

Maserati GranTurismo MC Corse Concept

Italian luxury sports car maker Maserati has just announced full details for the Maserati GranTurismo MC Corse Concept, which will debut at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. The GranTurismo MC Corse is a technology study on what future Maserati GT-class race cars may look like, though this is no rolling chassis.

With full GranTurismo MC powertrain intact, and horsepower upped to 450 bhp, the Corse Concept looks to compete with the likes of the Porsche Carrera 911 GT3 and Audi R8 GT3 as track-ready race cars, should Maserati choose to release a limited number of GranTurismo MC Corse cars to wealthy weekend track enthusiasts.

The design certainly looks the part, tightly based on the critically acclaimed Maserati GranTurismo S but featuring a number of touches that only add to the MC Corse's sporting appeal. But what is form without function?

GranTurismo MC Corse Powertrain

The MC Corse Concept uses a modified version of the excellent V8 motor used in the consumer Maserati GranTurismo S. Through ECU recalibration as well as the addition of larger intake and exhaust outlets, every ounce of performance has been squeezed out of this engine. In addition to 17 more horsepower, GranTurismo MC Corse torque has been upped to 376 lb-ft. @ 4750 rpm.

This torque figure speaks to the hard-revving nature of the Maserati GranTurismo V8. A heavy foot will be needed to drive the MC Corse to its full potential, but at least optimized aerodynamics will make sure none of the power is wasted.

Race Prepping the GranTurismo S - Weight, Aerodynamics and Safety

Because of the Italian sports car maker's focus on luxury, the hefty Maserati GranTurismo needed significant weight reduction and body modifications to be competitive at the GT racing level. Completely stripping the GranTurismo MC Corse concept's interior and liberal use of carbon fiber have allowed curb weight to drop from a rather portly 4145 pounds to a much more manageable 3086.

A carbon composite material built on a steel chassis, and Lexan plastic windows all around are responsible for the rest of the weight savings. Aero pieces on the MC Corse start with a revised front airdam and a boattail-style rear spoiler, providing extra downforce to keep the Maserati racer glued to the track.

Due to the stripper interior, which lacks airbags but does offer the driver added safety in the form of a full carbon fiber-strengthened roll cage and a 6-point safety harness, the GranTurismo MC Corse would not be road-legal even if it could pass emissions tests.

Still, with other luxury automakers planning track-only versions of their GT cars for public release, Maserati is testing the waters for bringing the GranTurismo MC Corse concept to production in the form of a turn-key race car.

2009 Dodge EV Concept

The Dodge EV electric sports car concept, based on the Lotus Europa, is exactly the car ailing Chrysler LLC needs. For a car like the EV concept to not see production would be admitting defeat for Chrysler/Dodge, which carries one of the worst MPG averages of any automaker.

Real Pure Electric Performance from Dodge

It's no secret that sports car drivers would never settle for something, for all its merits, as boring as a Toyota Prius. Automakers worldwide have hybrid or full electric sports car models in the works, trying to capture the hearts and car note payments of the future auto enthusiast on a green tip.

There's nothing particular outstanding about the Dodge EV when compared with other electric sports cars such as the Tesla Roadster, the RUF Concept A or the 2010 MINI E. The chassis comes courtesy of the Lotus Europa, that British automaker's larger sports car. Power comes from a 200 kW (268 equivalent bhp) electric motor putting power to the rear wheels.

An outstanding feature of such electric high performance ccars is the fact that all the torque is available from a standstill. The Dodge EV pushes a tire-crushing 480 lb-ft. of torque, primarily responsible for taking the 3000 pound sports car from 0-60 in what Dodge promises to be somewhere in the 4 second range.

High Performance, Zero Emissions, but is the Dodge EV Production-Bound?

Chrysler has the most uncertain future of any full-line automaker in the world right now. With GM in serious talks to buy Chrysler from Cerberus Financial and Daimler calling their current 19.9 percent stake in the American automaker a financial liability and nearly worthless, R&D budgets can't too high right now.

But GM, who has dumped its research and development budget into the dual-mode hybrid Volt powertrain and E85 Ethanol Flex Fuel green cars, could potentially have the chips to bring the Dodge EV to production, or to use the technology in anything from a Cruize to a Camaro.

Something called the General Motors EV brings to mind another electric car that has not actually given the company a good name. Still, times are changing, and full electric sports cars will be in greater demand than ever before.

2009 Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S

Maserati's critically and commercially successful Quattroporte has been on the market relatively unchanged for four model years, and is still a leader in the ultra-luxury sedan segment. New offerings from Porsche, Bentley and potentially Lamborghini are on the horizon, but the Quattroporte Sport GT S is now official and tangible.

The "Sport GT S" moniker refers to a modest bump in power and a redesigned suspension, as well as some beefier exterior bits that maintain the Quattroporte's classy and understated design while adding some performance cues to compete with new luxury sport sedans on the horizon.

On the outside, the Quattroporte Sport GT S gets titanium-finished headlight trim, a new grill and air inlets, and a "sport exhaust controlled by pneumatic valves for a deep, throaty and captivating sound" (yeah, we're not kidding here).

The Sport GT S interior gets the black-out treatment highlighted by new seats trimmed in Alcantara and "titanium colored" composite material. Whatever, the interior looks great and will give the Maserati enthusiast driver a considerably more visually interesting place to pilot his four door rocket from.

The suspension is lowered and stiffened, now employing single-rate dampers to eat up the twisties without knocking the silver spoon out of your yogurt parfait. Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S power now stands at 433 horses, and will be put to the road through an electronically controlled DSG which has been remapped for quicker shifts.

The Sport GT S is a nice extension to the aging Quattroporte line, but Maserati will need to shake things up if they'd like to stay on top of the class the Quattroporte all but created.

2010 Lotus Evora

The Lotus Evora, unveiled at the British International Motor Show, represents an evolution for Lotus in the manufacture of exciting lightweight British sports cars. The Lotus Evora, greenlighted for production and a release in summer of 2009, has sports car fans worldwide marveling at its beautiful design and thrilling new technology.

The Lotus Evora is the first unveiling of several new sports car models coming from Group Lotus, known in recent years predominantly as the masters of the Lotus Elise and Exige series. True British sports cars that are unlike any other on the track while retaining some streetability, the Lotus Elise and Exige are criticized for being too harsh for most sports car enthusiasts. Dodge announced pricing today for the all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger. The U.S. Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) will start at $21,995, which includes $675 for destination. Dodge dealers across the country are now taking orders for the 2009 Dodge Challenger, which will arrive this fall.

2009 BMW Z4

The BMW Z4 is ever present in any car city, especially in Los Angeles where BMW convertibles are treated as fashion accessories like pairs of shoes. But last generation's BMW Z4, with its perfectly adequate but not outstanding driving dynamics and lack of raw horsepower did not excite the true car enthusiast. Many BMW faithful turned to roadsters from Porsche, Audi or Honda for a better all-around driving experience.

The 2009 Z4, which BMW calls the "rebirth of the roadster", is given a significant redesign both inside and out. We like the new cleaner, simpler Z4 exterior. The 2009 model does away with most of the "flame surfacing" that complicated and uglified BMW's entire model line for a time, first introduced on the last Z4. Still sharp creased but following clean lines all the way around the body, the new BMW hard top convertible is easier on the eyes. While the proportions are almost the same, the car tricks the eye into believing the Z4 is longer than it is, with its shark-like shape having lost some weight.

The front end echoes that of the BMW 6 Series, but we find the Z4 far more desirable, especially when compared to the convertible 6 Series cars, with their bloated rear ends and ugly C pillar crease. The decision to go hard top, like the new 3 Series and presumably the upcoming 6 Series redesign, will allow the Z4 to maintain body rigidity levels not possible with a soft top. Still, the classic BMW soft top roadster look will be missed...

2009 BMW Z4 horsepower comes by way two engine choices, but those who choose the Z4 for its driver's car potential will undoubtedly go with the twin-turbo 3.0 liter inline 6 that began in the new BMW 3 Series and has made its way into nearly every model in the BMW lineup. In Z4 trim the twin turbo 6 cylinder makes an even 300 horsepower and should be good for a 0-60 acceleration time of 5.1 seconds with manual transmission, BMW says. Transmissions are a 6 speed manual or 7 speed DSG on turbo models or a 6 speed convential Tiptronic automatic on the smaller-engined Z4.

The 2009 BMW will be official introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, and should find its way into dealerships in the spring.

Audi R8 TDI Le Mans Concept

The Audi R8 TDI Le Mans concept luxury sports car is a technology and styling showcase coming from the German automaker of the storied R8 luxury supercar. Part of an Audi trend in offering true high performance diesel models with engine performance characteristics and raw power that rival, or exceed, those of their gasoline counterparts, the R8 TDI Le Mans offers subtle but meaningful body modifications over the current 2008 Audi R8, but the surfaces are just the beginning.

Inside the R8 TDI Le Mans is a diesel-powered, twin turbo V12 that is derived from the motor used in the Audi R10 TDI racer, winner of multiple 24 Hours of Le Mans victories and the hottest car on the endurance racing circuit today.

With its race-bred diesel technology, the 12 cylinder diesel engine in the R8 TDI Le Mans promises staggering performance numbers unlike anything coming from an oil burner to date.

Known for their outstanding torque numbers, diesel engines are moving more and more into the mainstream beyond use in heavy trucks and anemic economy cars.With German luxury car makers Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen and especially Audi leading the charge toward clean burning diesel engines, even the American car buying public is beginning to accept that diesel motors are not just for hauling boats or huge cargo containers of quacking chickens.

There is no reason why Audi cannot build a production version of the R8 TDI Le Mans, as this engine is fully tuned and ready to go. Build cost could be very high in the early stages of pushing through a diesel engine with this output, but this makes the R8 supercar a natural platform to try it out on. The car world is eagerly anticipating an all-but-assured announcement that a diesel-powered R8 TDI will be in showrooms sooner rather than later.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro

Today General Motors unveiled the final production version of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, a true American sports car that has been anticipated by Chevrolet fans now for years, since the last generation Chevrolet Camaro was killed in 2000.

The production 2010 Camaro differs little from the preproduction versions that have been shown for several months now, but small details on the Camaro such as a new retro interior decked out in brushed metal (plastic brushed metal?) trim complete the package. Whetting appetites since 2006 with the Chevrolet Camaro concept, GM has remained remarkably faithful to the original concept car. The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS tops the model range, and will be a true muscle car with the LS3 V8 motor and 6 speed manual transmission.

Ailing US-based GM is in need of a true sports car hit that is affordable to the masses, just as Chevrolet pulled off with the original Camaro pony car in 1967. Does the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro have the potential to turn around a Chevy brand that, save for the Corvette, has been mostly in the dumps for several years now? As the once-untouchable Chevrolet mark continues to bleed sales to Japanese, European and Korean automakers, the Camaro has the potential to bring excitement back into Chevrolet showrooms.

Look for elements of the Camaro's styling and especially the attractive retro-styled interior to filter their way into Chevrolet's other models. The 2010 Camaro is the American sports car the Holden-derived Pontiac GTO should have been.

Time will tell if the Camaro has the punch to turn Chevrolet's luck around, but having a well-styled and high performance true American sports car that is relatively affordable back in the lineup can't hurt things.

Rinspeed iChange Concept

Much hullabaloo in the past several days has been made about Porsche tuner Rinspeed's new dedicated concept model that could see production, the Rinspeed iChange. Just the latest in a series of electric-propelled sports car concepts, the Rinspeed iChange has more than its share of tricky show car bits to differentiate itself from the pack.

The iChange's most innovative feature comes in its ability to morph from a single-seat road-ready sports car into what Rinspeed calls a "3 passenger sports van." Something is perhaps lost in translation from the original German in calling the iChange Concept a van, but nonetheless the iChange can carry either one or three passengers depending on configuration.

When in multipassenger configuration, it sports a 1+2 seating configuration similar to that of the McLaren F1. The best part is that the iChange seating configuration change can be made electronically at the touch of a button. Like the remote start and "door" unlock functions, the driver uses an Apple iPhone to control the Rinspeed iChange in its body reconfiguration.

In reality, there are no doors at all. The entire front section of the body lifts off when it is given the remote command, allowing driver and passenger easy entry.

As all the new electric sports car concepts go, the Rinspeed iChange carries nothing too exciting in the power department. Due to current limitations in lithium ion batteries, electric car manufacturers have not yet figured out how to build a battery that can output real sports car horsepower while still providing adequate range.

The Rinspeed iChange has a stellar 0-60 time of just 4.2 seconds all the way up to a top speed of 220 km/h, but the range reported in preliminary specifications is a pathetic 90 km, rendering what looks like an exciting electric sports car essentially useless on the street until something can be done about electric car battery technology.

Keep an eye on Rinspeed and the iChange, as the German tuning powerhouse has the knowhow and the funding to pull off some wonderous things as eco-friendly sports car technology improves.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E Class Coupe

Mercedes-Benz stood by while early images of the 2010 E Class Coupe surfaced, saying nary a word about the new E Coupe's advanced engine choices and aerodynamic technology. In anticipation of the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz has let the cat out of the bag.

Sporting a beautiful body and plugging a hole in Mercedes-Benz linup left by the outgoing CL, the new E Class Coupe has the lowest coefficient of drag of any 'series-production car,' Mercedes says. Exactly what that means or the relative truth in the statement notwithstanding, a cofficient of drag of 0.24 is pretty darn good and better than most anything on the road, 'series or not.

A couple of exciting new Mercedes-Benz engines are debuting in the E Class Coupe, the biggest power output owned by the gasoline 388 horsepower plant in the E500. Not far behind in output and surely providing a better thrill-per-dollar ratio is the 231 hp 6 cylinder turbodiesel found in the E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupé. Either way you are getting a precision-designed Mercedes-Benz sport coupe with great performance potential.

A low curb weight sitting on Mercedes' new AGILITY CONTROL suspension sounds like a good performance recipe. With an electronically controlled damping system available in the optional sport suspension, the E Class Coupe's brain can control the settings for each shock absorber independently depending on road conditions sensed by each wheel. Fancy stuff.

The top-of-the-line diesel E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupe 48,671.00 Euro will retail in Europe for EU 48,671.00. The E500 and its Mercedes-Benz V8 will start at EU 66,045.00. Based on Mercedes-Benz product stragies, an AMG variant, perhaps with supercharged V8, is sure to follow soon.

The first E Class Coupe models will be available from Feb. 19 to order. An exact E Class Coupe release date has not yet been set, but should be announced at Geneva.

2010 Porsche Panamera Gran Turismo Turbo

Porsche's much-questioned decision to follow in the lead of Maserati and release a 4-door luxury sports sedan slotted in above cars like the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series is finally nearing its first real test: market reception.

The Panamera's official title has been given as the 2010 Porsche Panamera Gran Turismo. The top-of-the-line Panamera Gran Turismo model carries a twin-turbocharged Porsche V8 outputting 500 horsepower, and AWD. Early driving impressions have pegged the Panamera Turbo as much more like a 911 on the road than a Cayennne, even though the Panamera Gran Turismo's design has been near-universally criticized.

From some angles, the 2010 Panamera Turbo, S and 4S models carry a revolutionary design that is true-to-form for Porsche but smashes some industry notions of what a sedan needs to look like. Things get a little sketchy from the C-pillar rearward, though. Porsche's decision to release the 2010 Panamera as a 5-door hatchback rather than a true sedan has caused some head scratching, to say the least.

Almost looking as if it has been rear ended at parking lot speeds, the Panamera Gran Turismo's rear end could have benefitted from an elongated trunk rather than the afforementioned hatch.

There are hints of the Cayenne in the way the rear window wraps downward toward the bumper and splitter, while the front end is all 911. The result looks great if viewed from certain directions, and downright yucky when seen from others.

The Turbo, like the Panamera 4S but carrying more power, has full time AWD and Porsche's new 7 speed PDK DSG manual with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Priced above all but the most extreme of 911 models, the 2010 Panamera Turbo should make good use of its 500 horses and electronically controlled everything to make a serious push for the best driving dynamics found in a sedan to date, M5 included.

And for Porsche enthusiasts and family types for whom money is not an object, having a car that can comfortably haul the kids and all their gear with this type of performance prowess should be plenty. The Panamera line will sell, to be sure.

2009 Ferrari California

Maranello, May 13th 2008 - The first official photographs have been published of the Ferrari California, the latest addition to the new generation of Ferraris launched in 2004 with the 612 Scaglietti and added to more recently with the 430 Scuderia.

The Ferrari California joins the Prancing Horse's 8-cylinder family which has always been defined by power and performance. It also flanks the flagship 612 Scaglietti in the prestige sporty Grand Tourer segment.

The new Ferrari California will satisfy even the most demanding of owners in term of its superb vehicle dynamics and driving pleasure. The new model will be available exclusively as a convertible with a folding hard top. Both chassis and bodywork are aluminium, in line with the rest of the current range. The California will be powered by a new V8 engine mounted for the first time in the marque's history in the mid-front position.

In line with Ferrari tradition, the new model also features several innovations. Apart from its folding hard top, these include the original 2+ concept which guarantees exceptional versatility of use in the rear of the car. The California's 4,300 cc V8 engine features direct fuel injection and a "flat" crankshaft. It generates 460 CV at 7,500 rpm with a torque curve that enhances vehicle dynamics and provides maximum driving pleasure which is typical for Ferrari.

As per the traditional Ferrari transaxle layout, the engine, which allows the Ferrari California to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4.0 seconds, will be coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission that boosts the car's performance while enhancing the driving pleasure, improves ride comfort and reduces fuel consumption and emissions (c.310 g/km CO2). The comfort is further enhanced by a new multilink rear suspension system. The Ferrari California is also equipped with the exclusive F1-Trac traction control system which made its debut on the 599 GTB Fiorano and has been further honed to suit the typical driving conditions expected for this new GT. Brembo brakes featuring carbon-ceramic material disks as standard guarantee superbly efficient braking.

In addition to sporting the marque's classic styling cues, the cabin has also been beautifully trimmed using quality materials by Ferrari's own skilled artisans. New accessories and equipment, such as the seats, steering wheel, instrument panel and infotainment system, together with optimised aerodynamics ensure that this is a highly ergonomic and enjoyable car to drive regardless of whether the top is up or down.

The Ferrari California is aimed at owners who desire a car which embodies everything the Prancing Horse represents in terms of sporty design and innovation, but also seek a car with greater versatility than ever. Infiniti Essence Concept

The Infiniti Essence Concept, introduced at Geneva 2009, is unlike most concept cars in that it is presented with Louis Vuitton luggage matched to the new supercar that is custom fit inside the rear hatch. The Infiniti Essence uses a similar engine to the GT-R at its heart, but adds a newly-developed Nissan corporate electric motor to produce an extra 158 horsepower.

Far from a dressed up GT-R, the Infiniti Essence is hands down the most attractive car to ever come from Nissan, and arguably the most attractive Japanese car in history, concept or not. The instantly iconic design pulls elements from the GT-R and Infiniti's own G37 Coupe, though resembles nothing on the market today.

There are hints of the Fisker Karma in the Essence's front end, though the Essence Concept is infinitely more precisely excecuted than the Karma.

With a gasoline and electric combined output of 592 horsepower, the Essence dwarfs even the Nissan GT-R in raw power. This is no track day car though, at a body length of 4720 mm the Essence is as long as a Rolls Royce and likely nearly as heavy.

In official Essence press materials released to coincide with Geneva 2009, Infiniti is cryptic about production plans for an Infiniti model based on the Essence. At one point they are emphatic about the Essence's impact on the luxury brand's future, calling it "not is merely an indulgent birthday present from Infiniti to itself."

Later in the same press release, things are made more complicated when Infiniti says the Essence "isn't a teaser for a new model." One point is clear: the hybrid powertrain first employed in the Essence is bound for future Nissan/Infiniti hybrid cars, something the brand sorely needs as it seeks to compete with its Japanese counterparts. The Nissan Altima hybrid has not sold well, and cannot stack up to newer models from Toyota and Honda in the efficiency department.

Call it technology showcase, design trendsetter, or whatever you will, the Infiniti Essence Concept is knock-out gorgeous. It is no accident that a Japanese halo concept car makes its debut at Geneva, as Infiniti is primed and ready to bring its thrilling product line to the European market.

2009 Audi TT-RS

Although the 2009 Audi TT has improved greatly on previous models in terms of general fun-factory and handling, enthusiasts still don't place it in the same league as the M Coupes, Boxter/Caymans and S2000s of the world. The S line model, which debuted in 2008, served up a big helping of improvements, but Audi fans still wanted more.

Well, here it is. The Audi TT-RS, having freshly hit the show floor at Geneva, has every bit of Audi power and quattro performance from across the model line shoved in the German Bahnstormers' smallest package.

Interesting engine choice for the 2009 Audi TT-RS: a new 5 cylinder, turbocharged with likely rather tame boost to 340 bhp and 331.9 lb-ft. torque. If we're seeing 340 horses off the floor, think of the aftermarket options for a car with a precisely-engineered TFSI engine ready to handle a whole lot more turbo.

This is not to say the TT-RS is a slouch even by big-boy sports car standards. In fact, it bests nearly other small 2 seat roadster/coupe on the market in terms of low weight and high power, not to mention what should be a stellar application of quattro AWD.

The 6 speed manual--and the only transmission offered in the RS line is a conventional manual--remains to be tested, but is short in its throws and sure looks sticky.

There is an ongoing discussion among sports car rumor mongers on whether or not the 2009 Audi TT-RS will see road time in the United States without some fancy grey-market importing. We'll just have to wait and see. Audi is notorious for keeping many of its sickest models exclusive to Europe. We could always just move to Europe.
